On 2022-02-24, Russia started their full-scale genocidal aggression against Ukraine. As a Finn, I can relate to Russians coming over to invade too well. We have after all, fought more than 30 wars against them over the past 800 years. Even if Russia had been waging a proxy war against Russia since 2014, the full on war galvanized Finns against Russians once more.
I took this photo in August 2013, while I was living in France with my family. I had never published it, but it only seemed prudent to express how I felt about the war and try to do something with my art to help the Ukrainian people. The high contrast and the somewhat morbid story of the the ranks of sunflowers progressing towards death set against a fiery sky make the image convey a strong emotion about the absurdity of war.
Russians are lined up as cannon fodder against the Ukrainians by their insane leader(s). From left to right, from Russia to their graves…
