Saint-Hilaire-le-Château, Creuse #
Hidden deep within the lush, quiet woodlands near Saint-Hilaire-le-Château lies the Dolmen de Ponsat. Constructed from massive granite blocks during the Neolithic era, this megalithic chamber has endured for roughly five millennia and was officially classified as a French Historical Monument in 1936. Originally raised as a sacred resting place for the ancestors and a testament to eternity, the stones still hold a magnetic presence that seems to whisper to human nature across the ages.
Finding this secluded relic required a long search, eventually leading me along an ancient path deep into the heart of the forest. As I finally stepped into the shaded clearing, exhausted by the heat with camera in hand, the ancient silence wasn’t entirely vacant. The air still held the distinct, electric warmth of a very modern encounter. A contemporary couple hastily retreated from the site—fully clothed, fortunately, but with deeply flushed cheeks. Due to the narrowness of the trail, they had to pass right by me at close quarters, leaving behind the unmistakable, slightly awkward aura of a stolen, intimate moment. They had clearly chosen this timeless, sacred canopy as their own private sanctuary.
It offered a beautiful, subtle contrast: a site built millennia ago to honor the quietude of the dead briefly serving as a backdrop for the enduring vitality of human connection. Once the footsteps faded and the forest reclaimed its stillness, the Dolmen de Ponsat stood ready for my lens—carrying forward yet another unwritten secret in its long, silent history.
