On the road to Pontarion, Creuse #
This landscape photograph was captured on my way to judo practice in the village of Pontarion. I pulled over to take the shot as the view opened up from the edge of the famous Plateau de Millevaches. The “plateau of a thousand cows” truly lived up to its name that day, with a herd of reddish-brown Limousin cattle grazing peacefully in the valley below, sheltered by the tiered, forested hills.
But the true lesson of this image isn’t about its geography; it’s about color. A local female painter completely changed the way I look at these landscapes. She taught me not to see a heavy, stormy sky as just a simple “grey”—but to look for Gris de Payne (Payne’s Grey).
