I had stood atop Puy de Gaudy three times before, but the light had never quite yielded its magic. On this morning, I set out long before twilight, reaching my chosen vantage point just as the world began to wake in total stillness. From this height, the view opens across nearly 100 kilometers of rolling hills towards the distant, iconic silhouette of the Puy de Dôme.
Hidden deep within the lush, quiet woodlands near Saint-Hilaire-le-Château lies the Dolmen de Ponsat. Constructed from massive granite blocks during the Neolithic era, this megalithic chamber has endured for roughly five millennia and was officially classified as a French Historical Monument in 1936. Originally raised as a sacred resting place for the ancestors and a testament to eternity, the stones still hold a magnetic presence that seems to whisper to human nature across the ages.
This landscape photograph was captured on my way to judo practice in the village of Pontarion. I pulled over to take the shot as the view opened up from the edge of the famous Plateau de Millevaches. The “plateau of a thousand cows” truly lived up to its name that day, with a herd of reddish-brown Limousin cattle grazing peacefully in the valley below, sheltered by the tiered, forested hills.
This timeless landscape unfolded in the heart of Creuse, France, on a quiet autumn morning. Autumn is a magical season for landscape photography here; the sharp contrast in temperature and humidity between the cooling nights and the warming morning sun gives rise to magnificent, low-lying valley mists.
This landscape photograph leads us deep into the department of Corrèze and to one of France’s most distinctive destinations: the village of Collonges-la-Rouge. As the name itself reveals, everything here revolves around the color red. The village is built almost entirely from a unique red sandstone (grès rouge), whose strikingly warm and fiery hue comes from the high amount of iron oxide embedded within the stone.
This striking view of the Admonter Kalbling peak in the Limestone Alps was captured on the same journey that led to “The Forgotten Kingdom”. The day began with an ambitious climb following a steep path along a limestone stream, aiming for a grand waterfall hidden higher up. However, the relentless summer heat had done its work, reducing the cascading falls to a mere trickle.
This photograph was captured during a pleasant walk along the trail wrapping around Lake Courtille in Guéret. The Creuse region is well known for its iconic and highly regarded Limousin cattle—sturdy, beautiful reddish-brown cows that can be seen grazing across almost every local meadow.
This landscape photograph was specially chosen by my daughters, who immediately felt the scene looked like an illustration straight out of Hayao Miyazaki’s animated masterpiece, Howl’s Moving Castle. And it is true that a touch of magical realism rests here. On the horizon stands the famous rocky triptych of Puy des Trois Cornes—a 634-meter granite sentinel proudly watching over the surroundings of Saint-Vaury in Creuse, France.
In the summer of 2025, my wife and I were returning to Finland from a road trip in France and decided to drive through Austria. Our original plan for a short city break in Vienna was changed on the fly to a more nature-oriented option, better suited for our two Hovawart dogs.
A day trip to Bengtskär, the southernmost point of Finland, is always an experience. I wanted to capture what makes the island so unique. The eye travels over the smooth granite cliffs, polished by the last Ice Age and since rinsed bare by the sea. These ancient stones lead towards the lighthouse, which has steadfastly guarded the sea for over a hundred years. This landscape encapsulates the island’s very essence: remoteness and resilience.
